Beyond the Boxscore for August 13, 2008
Sorry about the night off, it was a birthday celebration.
Delmon Young is really starting to heat up now. After having just four homers the whole season, Young now has three bombs over the last five days. If this is the start of a hot streak for Delmon, he could really help carry your team to a championship. He has a TON of potential and offensive pop, so definitely give him a look over the next day or two to see if he is worth a roster spot on your team, but I would guess he would be.
The second start for the Cleveland Indians didn’t go as well for Anthony Reyes, although he pitched well enough to win. After escaping St. Louis, Reyes went six innings and only allowed two runs, but didn’t strikeout a batter. Given the state of the Indians team at this point, he isn’t going to get a bunch of wins, but perhaps a change of scenery will do him good.
Mike Lowell landed on the 15 day DL with an oblique injury. At least for the first game for the Sox, they moved Kevin Youkilis back to 3B, and moved Sean Casey in at first. not sure I would put any stock in Casey, although he should hit for a pretty decent average. He isn’t going to bring you to a championship, but could be a decent spot starter for your team.
It appears that the Cardinals have officially given the closer’s role to rookie Chris Perez. He is a thrill a minute with his walks and hit batsmen, but so far, so good for Perez. He was able to close out the Marlins on Wednesday night, and now has three saves this week. It is still unsure what they will do with Adam Wainwright when he comes back, but for now you can trust Perez.
John Maine returned from the DL on Wednesday, and was able to pick up the win against the Nationals. Maine lasted five innings, allowed only one hit, but did walk four to make it interesting. He finished his outing well today, and hopefully for his fantasy owners he is back on track.
Ian Stewart hit his third homer this week, and now is really making an impact on the Rockies. Stewart is the 3B of the future in Colorado, but is blocked by Helton and Atkins right now. But with the injury to Helton, he is getting pretty regular playing time. He has been exceptional in his return to the majors, and is certainly worth a roster spot on your team.
With the trade of Adam Dunn, the Reds have promoted Chris Dickerson from the minors. Dickerson is a nice speed/power combination that might be worth adding. In the minors, his average hasn’t been great, but he hit 11 homers and stole 23 bases in just 96 games this season. Keep an eye on Dickerson as a late season pickup if he shous any side of potential.
