Francisco Liriano Is Finally Back!

According to reports, the Twins have cut Livan Hernandez and recalled Francisco Liriano from Triple-A.  Liriano was 10-2 with a 3.28 ERA during that time, but some of that was when he first went down and was doing bad.  He has been electric for the past two months and if he is available in your league, I would give it a very serious LONG look towards picking him up.  He…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 7/18/08

Full slate of games tonight, but not a ton of news.

The Yankees won their first game after the break, getting some support from a guy I think will have a great second half, and a guy I think will have a cold second half. Mike Mussina won his 12th game of the year on Friday, and I continue to be shocked…

Mike Pelfrey Dominant Tonight

Mike PelfreyDon’t look now, but Mike Pelfrey has won 5 straight starts! Tonight, Pelfrey out-dueled second year sensation Tim Lincecum. Granted it was against the punchless Giants, but five straight wins is tough to ignore.

Pelfrey struck out five and walked none over the course of seven very solid innings. He only let up three hits and two of them were…

Miggy Smashes 2 Homeruns

Miguel CabreraMiguel Cabrera was 4-4 tonight with 2 HR and 3 RBI. So after going much of the first half in a disappointing haze, just like the Tigers team, Cabrera seems to be coming around. The stellar night brings Cabrera’s numbers up to a much more respectable: .291 15 and 53. Carry that out and you get another 30+, 100+ season.

It’s hard…

Trade Winds Blowing Early - Harden to the Cubs

Rich HardenRich Harden was dealt to the Cubbies tonight in part of a six player deal. The Cubs received both Harden and Chad Gaudin, in return they sent the A’s: talented prospect, RHP Sean Gallagher, Matt Murton, Eric Patterson and Josh Donaldson.

The immediate fantasy impact to Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin should be positive. Anytime quality arms go to the…

C.C. Sabathia Traded To Milwaukee

The trade of C.C. has consequences for a few different people.

Seth McClung will no longer be holding down the 5th spot in the Brewers rotation.

Jeremy Sowers should have a stronger hold on his place in the Indians roster. Not sure you want to go near him, however, as he sits at 0-4.

Brewers top prospect now goes the the Indians, an if he is given playing time, could really make…

Justin Upton Back On Track?

After going through an extended period of struggling, it appears that Justin Upton might be on the road back to stardom. After hitting five homers in the season’s first two weeks, Upton was stuck on just nine coming into July. Well, so far the Independence weekend has been good to young Justin, as he has connected on two more homers in just the first five days of the…

Volquez Continues To “Struggle”

For the third consecutive start, Edinson Volquez has allowed at least three earned runs, even though he earned his 11th win of the season.  Is this just a slight chink in the armor?  Or is Volquez proving that he is a mere mortal, capable of less than perfect starts?  Like I’ve been saying for a while, Volquez will have a great rest of the season, but he will certainly not…

Bullpen Blows Oliver Perez Gem

For the second consecutive start, Oliver Perez looked like the pitcher we all thought we were drafting back in March.   After allowing one run over seven innings against the Yankees, Perez was one step better on Sunday against the Phillies.  Perez threw seven shutout innings, while striking out six.  Whenever it seems that the Mets’ are playing on TV or against one of their rivals, he steps up to the…

Balester Struggles In Second Start

Since everyone is always looking for young pitching help at this time of year, just wanted to throw out this line of caution against rookie Collin Balester.  I would definitely look elsewhere for help for two reasons.  One, Balester had decent minors numbers, but nothing that would have your jaw droppping.  Second, playing for the Nationals isn’t going to do him any favors.  If he gives up two or three…
