Balester Struggles In Second Start

Since everyone is always looking for young pitching help at this time of year, just wanted to throw out this line of caution against rookie Collin Balester.  I would definitely look elsewhere for help for two reasons.  One, Balester had decent minors numbers, but nothing that would have your jaw droppping.  Second, playing for the Nationals isn’t going to do him any favors.  If he gives up two or three…

Good Injury News 7/5

White Sox closer Bobby Jenks underwent a battery of tests for his sore left shoulder and everything came back negative.  Jenks hopes to be back available for closing by this Tuesday.

Felix Hernandez is still on the disabled list, but according to reports will definitely be ready to go when he is eligible to return.  No definite date for his next start has been announced, but he is eligible to return…

Kevin Slowey Just Good Enough

It wasn’t pretty, but Kevin Slowey was just good enough to win his fourth straight decision.  Slowey went six innings, allowed five runs and struck out six.  Luckily the Twins bailed him out and scored nine runs.  After a year of disappointing performances, it looks more now that he is going to be the reliable pitcher the Twins thought they had.  Slowey is famous for his control, walking just 18 batters in…

Kerry Wood Blows Save, Takes Loss

You knew there was trouble when Wood, who has only walked nine all season long, opened the ninth issuing two walks. Surprisingly good, Kerry Wood, hadn’t blown a save since the middle of May, but this one was in jeopardy from the beginning. However, in the long term his strikeout ratio has been great and the Cubs are winning a lot of games giving him plenty of save…

Gagne Throws The 9th In Tie Game

I still would be very surprised to see him regain his closer’s role without an injury, or rash of inconsistency by Salomon Torres, but just thought it should be noted that Gagne pitched today in a pretty important situation, and I was surprised. I would not pick up Gagne in any league unless saves are at an incredible premium and most teams have relief pitchers they hope will close…

Koshansky Homers In 2008 Debut

I just had to make a quick post due to the fact that I wrote yesterday about the arrival of Joe Koshansky and how he might become fantasy relevant due to his power.  Well, right on cue!  Koshansky hit the first homer of his major league career off of Ryan Tucker.

It is too soon to make a move on Koshansky right now, unless you are in a really deep league…

Mike Mussina Continues Dream Season

This might surprise you, but Mike Mussina has never won 20 games in his career.  In fact, the past couple of seasons, he has struggled to win ten.  He was tapped by many fantasy know-it-alls (including myself) to be past his prime, and worthless as far as fantasy baseball was concerned.

Today, Mussina gave the Yankees exactly what they needed, an incredible pitching performance to make up for their lack of…

Returning Dodgers

Two of the walking wounded returned for the injury riddled Dodgers, but to much different results.

  • Andruw Jones patrolled centerfield for the first time since May 24th, and unfortunately picked up right where he left off at the plate. Jones was 0-5 with 4 strikeouts. Before this game, I actually considered taking a flier on Jones, but I am glad I waited to see him return. You should

Delmon Young Starting To Show Signs

After not hitting his first homer of the season until June 7th, Delmon Young didn’t wait nearly as long to hit his second as he did it on June 29th. Now, he is actually on a hot streak, as on July 4th, Delmon connected on his third of the season. If this guy gets hot, look out, as…

Pena Trying To Get Back In The Swing

After a breakout season in 2007, things haven’t been so easy for Rays’ 1B Carlos Pena. Pena did have two hits, including his 12th homer of the season on Friday but his average is still at .227. After hitting a career high 43 long balls last season, you had to expect Pena to take a step…
