Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 7/31/08; Trade Deadline Edition

OK, it's trade deadline day, let's take a look at the ramifications of some of the trades before we get into tonight's action.  Ken Griffey Jr was traded to the White Sox for minor leaguer Danny Richar and middle reliever Nick Masset.  Masset hasn't been anything worth talking about this season in relief for the Sox.  He is 1-0 with a 4.63 ERA and…

Chris Carpenter made his triumphant return to the Cardinals lineup on Wednesday, as the former Cy Younger came back to try to help St. Louis make a playoff run. Carpenter wasn’t around long enough to take the win, but he was surely on a pitch count. Carpenter threw 67 pitches over four innings, allowed just one run and struck out two…

Injury News and Analysis July 30th

Yup lots of injuries, 2 of which likely directly effected the World Series. Chipper Jones Chipper was placed on the DL for his strained Hamstring, but in actuality it was probably a combination of the hamstring and all of the other leg ailments he has had this season.   He's likely going to be on the DL for at least a few weeks, but that's what you expected when you drafted him. Tim Hudson Another…

Teixeira on the Move Again

It seems like every time I write something here, it happens to be on the same day as a major trade. Today's move was the biggest and most impactful one so far this year. The Angels get Mark Teixeira in return for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek. This marks the second straight year big Tex has…

Will Manny just keep being Manny somewhere besides Boston?  I SERIOUSLY doubt that Manny Ramirez will be traded anywhere before the deadline on the 31st, don't we go through this every year at some point?  Even if you don't like him, you have to admit one thing about Ramirez, he never lets off the field matters effect his play.  Manny belted his 20th homer of the season on Monday, and…

Are you happy now Mets’ fans? After the bullpen blew a six run lead in the 9th inning the last time that Johan Santana pitched, their big ticket went out Sunday and went the distance in a 9-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Listening to sports talk radio all week, I heard one crying fan after another saying Santana should…

Injury News and Analysis July 27th

Dustin McGowan

Dustin will undergo surgery on his shoulder this Thursday to repair his labrum and possibly his rotator cuff. Fraying of the labrum usually isn’t too severe a problem unless the fraying progressed into a labral tear or if there is a rotator cuff repair as well. He is obviously done for the year and depending on the damage inside his shoulder could extend well into next year…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy News and Notes 7/25/08

A lot of news revolving around the Yankees/Red Sox series tonight, as Joba Chamberlain took his real first step forward to becoming a dominating starter as he went into Fenway Park and shutout the Sox over seven innings and struck out nine.  Chamberlain is going to have a big finish to the season, so I would test his value in a trade (don't…

Two pitchers who give fantasy owners absolute fits with their inconsistency pitched gems on Thursday.  In New York, Oliver Perez was his usual self in big, important games.  Oliver went 7.2 innings, allowed just one run, and struck out 12.  He has been great his last five times out now, and perhaps he will be the pitcher we thought he could.  Hey, he…
