Beyond the Boxscore Weekend Edition - 8/22-8/24

Aaron Harang was finally able to get back into the win column on Friday, as he threw six shutout innings and struck out four batters as he raised his nightmare season’s record to 4-13. The Harangatang, as one of my most loyal readers likes to call him, won his first game since June 13th, and even though he had a quality…

Beyond the Boxscore for August 14, 2008

It doesn’t get much better of a pitching matchup than Jake Peavy and Ben Sheets. Sheets has beaten the odds and actually remained healthy for the vast majority of the season, while Peavy has been his usual dominant self in 2008.  They didn’t disappoint.  Sheets went 6.2 innings, allowed three runs and struck out four.  But he was outdone by Peavy who went…

Cueto Approaches .500

After going through a really rough period, Reds’ rookie Johnny Cueto has turned the corner back again and has been pitching very effectively. Cueto was great Thursday against the Nationals, as he allowed just three runs over seven innings and struck out eight and his record is now 7-8. His ERA is still in the mid 4s, so…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 6/28/08

I just want to start out with a situation that really made me mad! Ok, so it is safe to assume that Justin Verlander is back. He has had now five straight starts where he allowed three runs or less, and his ERA is down almost two full runs in the past two months. So tonight he throws six…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 6/6/08

Felix Hernandez might be starting to live up to his nickname of King Felix. It is way to early to make that kind of statement, but the 22-year old Hernandez has put a couple of good starts together. With his six-inning effort tonight, that is two straight outings in which he didn’t allow a run. I get…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 6/1/08

Reds’ rookie Johnny Cueto threw his fourth straight game in which he allowed three runs or less. A guy who made so much noise in the beginning of the fantasy season is now flying under the radar a bit I think. He was sent packing from a bunch of fantasy teams in early May, and if that is the case in your league, do you have anyone expendable? If…

Beyond the Boxscore - Fantasy MLB News and Notes 5/28/08

A congratulations to Ryan is in order, who by the time he reads this, should be a father to a second beautiful baby girl (Good luck when they are teenagers!). So in the time he is away, I will try to fill his shoes with tonight’s Beyond the Boxscore.

Daisuke Matsuzaka left yesterday’s Redsox game at the start of the fifth inning. It was first believed to…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 5/27/08

Reds’ rookie Jay Bruce had quite the major league debut for himself. Bruce went 3-3 with two walks and a stolen base. The same thing applies to Bruce that I said about Kershaw the other day. There’s not much more to say about Bruce. If he is available, go get him right away, he should have a major fantasy impact in 2008.

I have been avoiding writing about Eric Hinske…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 5/16/08

It has been an offensive night tonight, with baseballs leaving ballparks all over the country.

By the 5th inning of tonight’s game, Phillies CF Jayson Werth had three home runs and eight RBI tying the franchise record for runs batted in within a single game. Werth has been a decent player to have at the end of your roster, but tonight someone will grab him and start to play him…

Beyond the Boxscore–Fantasy MLB News and Notes 5/11/08

I want to start tonight by wishing a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, especially my wonderful mother who has meant so much to my life. And also to my wife, who will be a mother for the second time at any minute. We all owe so much to these women, make sure they know what they mean to you. I know fantasy baseball…
