Week 14 Roundtable

Welcome to the Fighting Chance Roundtable! Each week we will be asking our panel of Fighting Chance Staff a series of questions for the upcoming slate of NFL games. Each person will give you the best answer to the question in order to help set your lineups this week, both season long and DFS. This week we have myself (@fightingchance), Steve Rapin (@fantasygeek37), Jim Day (@fantasytaz),Patrick Wisniewski (@polkapat), Brian Drake (@drakefantasy). Give them a follow them on Twitter and enjoy the Week 14 Roundtable!

Sleeper of the week

Steve’s Pick - Zay Jones, WR, Buffalo Bills. Zay Jones has quietly been putting up decent numbers over the last month or so of the season. He has four or more catches in four of his last five games and has scored thrice (I love that word) in the last three weeks. He had nine targets last week against the Dolphins and 11 targets in Week 12 against the Jets, who Buffalo just so happens to be playing again this week. Add in the fact that the Jets are 31st in surrendering points to slot wide receivers and we have ourselves a recipe for success for Zay Jones in Week 14.

Polka’s Pick – Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals. Just what a 134 year old WR needs is to play the Lions for a confidence boost, and I’m willing to bet they won’t break David Johnson’s hand in the first quarter again either.  The Lions will be focused on DJ way more than the best player in Cardinals history, and he will catch seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Brian’s Pick – Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers. In a week that features so many fresh faces at the running back position I'm going to go a different route. Let's look at this fresh faced quarterback in a sleepy town called Green Bay.  His name is Aaron Rodgers.  Maybe you've heard of this kid and the fact he has a new head coach.  Joe Philbin takes over the head job and is also "calling plays".  Bullshit.  This old fart hasn't called a game in the NFL in 20 years.  This is going to be Rodgers doing what he wants at the line.  No huddle, hurry up, all his favorite routes.  Nobody is on AR this week so jump on him and reap the benefits.

Jim’s Pick - DaeSean Hamilton,WR, Denver Broncos.  With Emmanuel Sanders going on IR Hamilton will be the next man up. He should plenty of opportunities working out of the slot and while he is not a super speedster or even a crazily athletic, he is a solid player who runs good routes. By no means am I suggesting you start him in season long leagues in the first week of your playoffs, but if you play in DFS, he makes an excellent punt play in a GPP.

Ryan’s Pick – LeGarrette Blount, RB, Detroit Lions.  With Kerryon Johnson ruled out for Week 14, this looks like a tasty matchup for Blount. Sure he is far from the sexiest pick, but he’s been getting more opportunity than he probably deserves all season long. So why not start him against one of the worst run defenses in football? Look for a 100 yard game and a touchdown.

Bust of the Week

Jim’s Pick - Josh Adams, RB, Philadelphia Eagles. Adams is going up against a tough Dallas defense this week, a team that only allowed him 47 rushing yards in Week 10. When you throw in the fact that he is definitely involved in a committee with Clement, Sproles and even Smallwood and he doesn’t catch many passes, he will be very hard to trust in Week 14. Look for other options this week.

Brian’s Pick – Spencer Ware, RB, Kansas City Chiefs. Rough matchup against a Ravens defense who allows the fewest points to backs this season.  I'm sure you smashed the piggy bank of FAAB to get him but it's just not a smart play this week.  Your season is on the line, look elsewhere.

Polka’s Pick – Phillip Lindsay, RB, Denver Broncos. Philip Lindsey isn’t going out on a limb here, but against the sucky Niners you’d think he’d run for 250 yards and four touchdowns.  I see him laying an egg here, with just Courtland Sutton on the WR radar, Lindsey will see eight in his box all day and I’m not sure if a rookie can handle eight violating his box in San Francisco.

Steve’s Pick - Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers. There are a lot of things pointing in the wrong direction for Cam Newton this week. He’s dealing with a shoulder injury which could impact his performance. He’s facing the Browns who have only allowed two opposing quarterbacks to finish as a top ten fantasy quarterback this season. Finally, the Panthers are playing in Cleveland and they have only averaged 19.8 points per game on the road compared to 30.8 when playing at home. All signs point to Cam struggling in Week 14 against the Browns.

Ryan’s Pick – Spencer Ware, RB, Kansas City Chiefs. Everyone was so quick to crown Ware the next big thing in fantasy football after the release of Kareem Hunt, and while he did OK, you could see that he is a LONG way from Kareem Hunt. I expect the same to continue this week against a tough Ravens defense, and while he might have flex play consideration I don’t see Ware as an automatic every week start.

Which dual threat (running/passing) QB do you like best Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson?

Jim’s Pick – Josh Allen. Lamar Jackson has been the talk of the league since taking over for Joe Flacco, but it’s been Josh Allen that has been the better QB the last 2 weeks. In fact, Allen has been the #1 QB for the last two weeks combined, averaging just over 30 points a game as opposed to Jackson’s 21 points. Allen faces the Jets this week, who are better against the pass than Jackson’s opponent the Chiefs but should force Allen to run quite a bit once again. Then when you add the chance that Joe Flacco gets some playing time for the Ravens if they get behind and I have to go with Allen as the better option this week.

Brian’s Pick – Josh Allen. Neither kid should be playing because they just aren't ready but that isn't the world we live in.  Allen can at least fool you once in a while thinking he can be a competent passer.  Give me the Buffalo gunslinger to connect on a deep ball or two and return value.

Steve’s Pick – Lamar Jackson. I’m going with the luscious legs of Lamar Jackson over Josh Allen in the battle of rushing quarterbacks. He has a better track record when it comes to rushing production and I think Jackson will be forced to try and create more offense in the Ravens matchup against the Chiefs. He could set a career high for passing yards and if he rushes for 70+ yards like he’s done in his first three games, Jackson could be fantasy gold this week.

Polka’s Pick - Josh Allen. I PLEAD THE FIFTH! This is like picking which STD I’d rather have, and after time in the Philippines, I don’t want any! Yet, if I have to pick one of these turds, give me Allen at home versus another sad sack defense in the J.E.T.S. – Jets, Jets, Jets!

Ryan’s Pick – Josh Allen. Both are risky plays but, I feel like you have a better shot with Allen. Jackson might be the bigger running threat, but I feel like his accuracy is somehow worse than Allen’s if that is possible at all. The Bills are risky as far as whether their offense will perform or not, but when they do, Allen is a great option. He dominates the offense with his throwing and his running, and while this one is very close, I lean towards Allen.

Which waiver running back do you like best for Week 14? Jaylen Samuels, Jeff Wilson Jr, Justin Jackson?

Brian’s Pick – Jaylen Samuels. I really like all three of these backs.  I'd be happy to start any of them but if I could only have one it would Samuels.  Not only will he potentially benefit from a great game script but the Steelers won't pull him on the goal line.  Wilson should be a monster for San Fran as he racks up the touches but Samuels to me is the play.  Especially in Yahoo where he doubles as a TE.

Polka’s Pick – Jaylen Samuels. It’s extremely hard for me to go against any Steeler in that offense, even on the road.  The Steelers are in Oakland, it’s almost a practice game if the Steelers were at home.  We know they suck on the road, but the Raiders simply suck! Jaylen Samuels gets my pick here.

Steve’s Pick – Jeff Wilson. For this week, I prefer Jeff Wilson Jr. over Jaylen Samuels and Justin Jackson. Not only did Wilson have 15 rush attempts last week, but he added eight receptions for 73 yards on nine targets as well. Justin Jackson will likely split time with Austin Ekeler and the Steelers have already hinted that Samuels may not carry a full work load this week against the Raiders. With Matt Brieda already ruled out, I think Wilson gets as much work as he can handle is the best of the trio in Week 14.

Jim’s Pick - Jeff Wilson. Of the 3 RBs listed I like Jeffrey Wilson of San Francisco the most this week. Once Breida went down last week Wilson stepped right in and did a great job. While he rushed 15 times for 61 yards, he did the most damage through the air with 8 receptions for 73 yards on 9 targets. This week he does have the toughest matchup of the 3 RBs listed, but I am counting on him once again being heavily involved in the passing game. Denver’s rush defense has been very strong since Week 6 with no rushing TDs allowed since, but they have allowed 3 RBs to catch at least 5 balls.

Ryan’s Pick - Jaylen Samuels. This one is a close one. I do not trust Justin Jackson yet. I do think that Jeff Wilson will be the back of the three that is the biggest part of the team’s offense of the three. However, he faces a tough Broncos defense. That leaves me with Jaylen Samuels. I am not afraid of Stevan Ridley stealing much work, and with the Steelers needing a win and facing the shitbag Raiders, I expect Samuels to have a big game both running and receiving and will have the best week of these three backs.

Who will have the better game? Davante Adams vs. Falcons or Julio Jones vs. Packers?

Steve’s Pick – Julio Jones. I’m going with Julio Jones to have a better game than Davante Adams in their head to head Week 14 matchup. I honestly have them ranked four and five in my weekly rankings, but for this contest, I’m going with Julio just because I know Ryan hates him. Eff you Ryan!!!

Jim’s Pick – Julio Jones. Trying to pick between Julio Jones and Devante Adams is a total crap shoot. In the 12 games each have played each has won 6 weeks over the other. While Adams is at home, there are a lot of unknowns in Green Bay after the firing of Mike McCarthy. When you add that to the fact that Atlanta is suddenly playing much better against the pass than Green Bay is, Julio looks like the pick this week. Over the last 5 weeks Atlanta is 4th against opposing WRs while Green Bay is 28th. I am picking Jones for Week 14.

Brian’s Pick – Davante Adams. Davante Adams is a flat out stud.  His season has been magical but under the radar.  He has 11 touchdowns in 12 games played.  This Atlanta secondary couldn't stop a toddler from getting to a cookie jar.  33 targets over the past 3 contests.  Feed the man more and enjoy his points in your lineup!

Polka’s Pick – Davante Adams. I’m going with Davante Adams in this tilt, most teams are fully rejuvenated when a Head Coach gets sacked, and Julio Jones is nursing an injury to his footsie while Adams will tear the ass out of the Falcons secondary at home in typical December Midwest winter Sunday.

Ryan’s Pick. Davante Adams. Julio Jones gets so many catches and yards, but he has struggled with touchdowns. Adams is among the league leaders in touchdown passes and has become the only reliable pass catcher for Aaron Rodgers. I can’t possibly choose Jones here although I think they will both have good games. I think Adams has the better chance of having a touchdown, and given the fact that I think they can both have 100 yard games that makes me lean slightly towards Davante Adams.
